Thanksgiving Day 2016

Well, we’re definitely not traditional but I think we had a very good day!

This morning we got up at eight in the morning and made two stops to pick up Craigslist things. We got a Disneyland 60th Anniversary truck NIB for my son for Christmas and then we drove about 40 minutes North to buy 30 board games for $15. THAT was a great investment. Several of the games are versions from the 50’s which is wicked cool.

After that, we drove back and headed to Red Arrow Diner for breakfast/our big meal of the day. It was good and quick and we left a $10 on a $30 bills so the server’s should be happy.

The next plan was to go walk around some old cemeteries. It’s a favorite past time of mine that the Jacks are starting to enjoy as well. A couple nights ago we’d driven past an old cemetery from 1740 so that was the first stop. Little did we know, the graveyard belonged to this guy…

Matthew Thornton. A Signer of the Declaration of Independence. Very cool and very surprising!!!

There are the oldest two markers I found. 1753 & 1749

After that. We headed back to our neck of the woods and visited Valley Cemetery here in Manchester. We walked around a little bit and then basically came across all the homeless camps and decided to call it a day.

It was nice though because it was spitting snow all morning which made things even more nice!

After our adventures, we came home and watched some TV while my husband went through the games. Most were pretty complete which was awesome. After that we took a nice nap, did some dishes, made green bean casserole and watched the newest episode of Expedition Unknown before it was time for a couple of games.

As a reminder, my husband is Jack (Jr) – 45. I’m Sarah – 36 and our son is Jack (III) – 7.

Anyway, we decided to play Life first. Kiddo got very lucky and got a lot of money right off the bat. He got a little antsy at the end but in general, he really liked the game. We rigged it and kiddo won. After that we played a game called Story Time: Fairy Tale. I really really liked it. LOL but I enjoy silly stories so it was fun.

So, at the end of the day, our family Thanksgiving was untraditional but it was very nice same very us!!!

Life is good!

Family Time Is Precious

Today I gave up my serving shift after a series of really successful bartending shifts in order to spend some time with my number one guys.

This morning we went out, got some drinks from Speedway and went out to pay some bills. After that, kiddo played in his room and the hubby and I watched Suicide Squad which he saw in the theater but I hadn’t. I actually liked it. ๐Ÿ™‚

After that, we set up dinner in the Crock-Pot and headed out to the Budweiser brewery to see the Brewery Lights and see the Clydesdale. It was about 35 degrees outside and dark but the lights were pretty. We walked out to see the horses but got there about an hour too late. Oops! My bad! I had to promise kiddo that we’d go back next week to see the horses. Freaking Mommy fail but when we walked back out, we had a seat by the outside fires and warmed up a bit. All in all, it was a nice walk in the brisk air.

Now, we’re watching WWE Smackdown Live and talking. A WrestleMania ad came on for next year’s show which happens to be in Orlando. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜ Cue my big mouth… “If we happen to be down in Florida by April, we totally have to go to WrestleMania.” He said, “not even WrestleMania… All the Indy wrestling shows that will be in the area will be great to see.” Ummmm…. Yes. Please!!!!!”

So, my wait list availability activates the second week of January so maybe… Just maybe, I’ll get the offer but then!!!!! That’d be AMAZING!!!!!!

As for Thanksgiving, we finally have a plan. It’s a wicked untraditional but hey… That’s what we do. … We’re going to have breakfast at Red Arrow Diner and then we’re off to explore the Manchester cemetery. It’s supposed to snow that day too so I may be able to take some beautiful photos. *fingers crossed*

Technology is great… When it works.

Such an annoying day. Around noon my Xfinity “wireless gateway” stopped working. After 45 minutes, they said that we needed a new box. So I drive down to the store and get a new one. 8 hours and 4 – 30+ minute phone calls later, the new box is bad and I have to go back to the Xfinity store tomorrow and get yet another one. Irritating!!!!

This being said, I’ve mentally been obsessing about the day that I finally get my WDW job offer. I honestly think I’ll bawl my eyes out. LOL

I need to relax but HOW?!?

I’m irritating my husband these days with, “if we move to FL…” I don’t mean to be a pain but seriously, I get so worked up!! I want to work for WDW!!

I also realized that WrestleMania is in Orlando this year so it’d be SOOOO bad ass to go to the events in the area leading up to the show! And I want to go to NXT tapings at Full Sail University! And I want to play board games with the dudes from Dice Tower Games. So many things to do and see!!

Oh well, I need to lay off so I’ll just post here instead. Hahaha

On a side note, we got a deep fryer last night so that should be fun! Hubby is currently making French fries for the kiddo.

Also, we’re marathoning Expedition Unknown. I freaking love Josh Gates and his shows! So good!!

The Waiting Game

So, going on wait list was the best thing for my family. Uprooting during the holidays would not have worked. However, now I’m thinking about my potential future job all the time. It’s both incredibly exciting and a little nerve racking to be so close to achieving that life long dream!

This morning we started a “Dimes for Disney (Relocation)” jar. I figure that every bit helps and who’s gonna miss a bunch of dimes? Quarters? … I might actually miss that too much. LOL

Tonight I’m bartending at work so at least that is a solid distraction. ๐Ÿ˜‚

I’ll say this as well… My husband homeschools son and is a stay at home dad so the move is pretty easy for us as a family unit.๐Ÿ˜€

Interview and Wait Listed!

So… now that you know a bit about me, I will tell you a bit about how I decided on what to apply for. My end goal for Disney was always to be a server but after reading online, I found that they rarely hire people into that highly sought after position. Because of that, I figured I would do just about anything to get my food in the door. The only thing I really required was a position that dealt with the public because nothing would be more fulfilling to me than to have the opportunity to make people smile each and every day!

I told some people my goal of serving at Disney and they say things like, Oh! That will be stressful or Oh! That sounds like a lot of work but, in reality, it is a job I already do. I currently work as a server and bartender and run my butt off on a daily basis. The only difference would be that I would be doing the job I love INSIDE of a place that I love. Even on the bad days, you are at WDW! How bad can it be?!

So I applied for a few various job but nothing that really reached out to be. Then I saw it. The job was posted 10-31-16 and was only up about 3 days. It was a restaurant host/hostess position. The starting pay is low but it would get me into restaurants at the park. That was great. So, using my LinkedIn account, I applied. I was surprised to see that in the application, they ask you to identify 2 other jobs that you have interest in. Well ย guess what?! Server was an option!!!! Winner! Winner! Clearly, option #2 was server and I think #3 was like busser or something along those lines.

I applied 10-31-16 at about 4pm EST. When I woke up the next morning, I had an email to take the first portion of the interview process. It was an online evaluation. ย As soon as I finished it that morning, I was informed that I was moving on to the next portion of the interview process. It was an interview… In person or phone was ok. Since I live in NH, I opted for the phone interview the following Friday 11-4. I honestly was so nervous before the call because I am 36 years old and trying to get a job against people 18 years younger than me. I KNEW I was qualified but I was not sure if I was what they wanted.

When the nice girl called me, we spoke for a minute about the interview process and the position. I quickly informed her that my end goal was to be a server and my 10+ years in the industry would help me get there. After talking for a few minutes, she explained to me that if I’d rather be interviewed for server, it was fine but she was concerned that I may not pass as Disney has very high standards. I accepted the challenge, knowing that if I failed that interview, I was S.O.L. for the host job.

So, my interview was actually SUPER easy for someone who has actually been in the business for a long time. “How do you hand out food and drinks to a table?” “What is auctioning off food?” “When is it ok to do?” “Name 3 white wines.” “Name 3 red wines.” We spoke about the business and how the different locations work in the parks and resorts.

She asked me if I have tattoos or body modifications. I told her I have two tattoos. One on my back and one of my ankle. She noted the ankle one and mentioned that I will not be able to work in a restaurant with dresses because my tattoo will show. I will not lie. I was REALLY sad because I would LOVE to work for Sci Fi Dine In in Hollywood Studios because I love their rockabilly style dresses! TOO COOL! Oh well… I will live, right?!

Anyway, after about 35 minutes of interview and chatting, I was asked when I would be able to move to FL. I said that January would be the earliest. In reality, we’d planned to move later but a dream is a dream, right?! So, I am officially now on the server, tipped position, wait list!!!!! I will be activated on the wait list the second week of January and when a position does come open, WDW will want me to be there within two weeks! O_O

So, my husband is kinda on board and we are just playing things by ear to see when I get the offer and if it comes, with a little bit of luck, we can be off to a great new adventure!

Here is a snippet of the email I got about the wait list…

Thank you for interviewing with the Walt Disney Worldยฎ Resort Recruitment team.

As mentioned during your interview, you are currently on the waitlist for a Full Time or Part Time F&B Server-Tipped role and any additional roles recommended by your Recruiter.

This blog is where I will update my thoughts and ideas about WDW and my potential new position! WOOHOO!!!!!

An Introduction

Welcome to my new blog. My name is Sarah. I’m 36 and I’ve been married to my best friend for 15 years. We have a seven year old son and just this last September (2016), we were able to go on our family vacation to Walt Disney World.

Now, I was born in Anaheim, CA. Home of Disneyland. As a child, my aunt and uncle worked at both Knott’s Berry Farm and Disneyland so we were able to visit the parks quite often. As an adult, I never lost my love for Disney.

We’ve gone from Southern California to Alaska to Washington state to our current home in New Hampshire. I have a solid career background as a restaurant manager but recently stepped down into a serving position to give myself more family time. Now that I am serving, my dream career job is serving at Walt Disney World.

Yes, one reason of wanting the job is financial. However, the main reason is that I love my job (despite the hard times) and I love Disney. Being able to combine the two would be priceless. A big rock to getting said dream job? We have to relocate AGAIN and this time to Florida.

My husband seems vaguely supportive of the idea so, even though he said we couldn’t move until 2018, I started applying for jobs… ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

Next post will be about the application and interview process to date…
